I alternate between a few different backpacks depending on trip length, so I keep the core of my electronic gear in an organizer pouch. I can just toss this into whatever bag I want to take: Vanquest EDCM-SLIM 2.0 It’s a Vanquest EDCM-SLIM 2.0 8″ x 6″ organizer pouch with lots of webbing. Wild overkill for a geek bag. Vanquest makes lots of tactical, medical, and first aid organizers with Molle straps for military folks. I was really torn between this and their FTIM 5×7, but went with the EDCM after reading a couple of reviews that said the dual-zipper format of…Read
Kind of a convoluted title, I know, but I get questions like this every now and then: @BrentO read your article on your home setup, any chance there could be a follow up on how you have things configured? You’re using a Mac, but how do you do SQL stuff effectively on a non windows platform? Would be helpful to share any tips. — Chris Lumnah (@lumnah) September 25, 2018 Chris and I had a good conversation on Twitter, and I figured it’s time to post an updated version of how I work. I have a “fake job” – I’m…Read
We moved to San Diego and I refreshed my computer hardware, so it’s time for another update in my home office blog post series. Here’s what I’m using: Home office 2018 Standing Desk: Xdesk Terra Pro – Expensive, but works wonderfully and is built to last. I love the 3 height presets, and I’ve got them set for sitting, standing, and standing on top of my Fluidstance balance board. (There’s also an Aeron chair out of frame – I wheel it around behind my desk when I’m not using it.) Computer: Apple MacBook Pro 15″ (2018) – 6-core Intel Core…Read
We just moved into a new place and I added a few more touches to my home office setup. I use a motorized sit/stand NextDesk Terra Pro, so I can move the whole desk up or down with the touch of a button. I can’t say enough good things about that desk – it’s still rock solid, and survived a few moves. I wanted to up my minimalism game, though, so I mounted some of my gear underneath the desktop: Mounting the Mac Pro under my desk The thing with the bright sticker is the NextDesk motor controller, and that’s always…Read
My desk setup. I work from home as a database consultant. For years, I’ve had two desks in my office – a normal sitting desk, and a standing desk over in the corner. Every now and then, when I was feeling ambitious, I’d disconnect my laptop, shuffle over to the standing desk, and work from over there. But because I had to move my laptop over there, and I didn’t have the same monitor/keyboard/trackpad, and I didn’t have my recording gear over there…I almost never bothered. The standing desk went unused. A few months ago, I took the plunge and…Read
My idea of the perfect desk would be something straight out of the Apple store – bare tables with no visible wiring. Back here in reality, though, I’ve got monitor cabling, device chargers, microphone and speaker cabling, etc, etc. Every year or two, I take a shot at making a really clean, minimalist desk, and here’s how it turned out this weekend: State of the Office 2013 It’s hard to really appreciate it until you see it from behind: Back of the Desk Yes, that’s Ernie’s ears peeking out from her black chair. That used to be my chair, but…Read
I’m running out of excuses to produce bad T-SQL: My Home Office Setup We just finished moving up the street in downtown Chicago, and I’ve finally made it: I’ve got the proverbial corner office. The view north up Michigan Avenue: Heading North That’s Millennium Park, home of the Bean, Buckingham Fountain, and lots of festivals. On the left side, the Art Institute and the Gehry-designed Pritzker Pavilion finish up the park just short of a line of skyscrapers including the Microsoft offices where our local user group meets. The view east toward Lake Michigan: Beyond My Monitor When I look…Read
